I have to be honest, being a Calgary Flames fan over the past few years has made me terribly pessimistic. The 2003-04 season, which saw Calgary push its way to the finals, brought with it hope and optimism after being a franchise that hadn't made the playoffs in seven years. But with that came great expectations that maybe no team could match, unless of course you are the Detroit Red Wings. In the last four years the team has, for the most, part sputtered into the playoffs like Archie'sjalopy and was subsequently eliminated in the first round each time.It has been what, as a fan, I have come to expect. This year it looked as though the Flames were going to prove me wrong, getting off to one of their best starts in franchise history, but over the last week the club has gone 1-3-1 in their last five games and have reverted back to their former selves. And it couldn't have happened at a worse time as all the teams in the Northwest Division have been getting their games going, which means they are nipping at the Flames' heels worse than a Christmas song about Jack Frost.Unless this team can reignite their fire, it may be on the outside looking in come the New Year with regards to a playoff spot in the West.Going into tonight's game against the first place Los Angeles Kings, the Flames are just four points away from the ninth best teams in the Conference, which are the always-dangerous Dallas Stars and the Vancouver Canucks, who have been streaking like Will Ferrell in Old School of late.It is a significant time in the schedule for the Calgary Flames to keep getting points, as it is hard to believe that if Miikka Kiprusoff is deemed the Finnish keeper for the 2010 Winter Olympics that he will be able to keep playing any better than he has with limited rest. And while Calgary has shown a well-rounded attack with players like Nigel Dawes, Rene Bourque, and Curtis Glencross stepping up this season, it may just be a matter of time before the wheels fall off.Let's face it, they could use another game-breaking goal-scorer, which are harder to come by now-a-days than a Zhu Zhu Pet.Just in case your wondering, Mike Cammalleri has 18 goals thus far in Montreal, which is one more than Iginla and eight more than the nearest Flame scorer, but hey what do I know, I'm pulling a Ferris Bueller on work in order to blog on B/R.Keep in mind, three of the teams' top four scorers are all over the age of 31, and after that there are more holes than Tiger Woods golfing Pebble Beach with all of his mistresses caddying. In the Western Conference it is difficult picking any of the teams to miss the playoffs, especially with the unforeseen play of Colorado, Phoenix, and the Flames' opponent tonight the L.A.

Kings. So what makes Calgary so special that they can lock down a spotThis all may just be my ugly pessimistic side rearing it's ugly head, which as I said has been caused by repeat disappointment over the past few seasons.Or it may just be that this edition of the Calgary Flames are indeed showing their true colours, in which case they may have already exceeded all expectations. As a fan, I hope that is not indeed the case. . The NFL was shaken by the tragic news that Bengals WR Chris Henry had passed away from injuries suffered from an accident As someone, who is part of the “NFL Family”, I can only feel remorse today (December 17, 2009) as the Charlotte police confirmed that Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry, age 26, passed away this morning at 6:36 a.m ET. Henry had been on life support since yesterday when he fell out of the back of a pickup truck following a domestic dispute with his fiancLoleini Tonga. The death of Henry brings a sad ending to a once-promising career that had recently re-blossomed after the former high draft pick (third round 83rd overall in the 2005 NFL Draft) had put aside some earlier troubles (arrests and league mandated suspensions) to finally grow-up. Henry was a five-year NFL veteran who used his speed and wiry frame (6’4, 190) to excel at catching the “deep ball” averaged 15.6 yards per catch for his career. Earlier in his career, Henry’s immaturity off the field affected his standing on the Bengals and threatened his career in the NFL overall. At one point a couple of years ago, Henry and his former University of West Virginia teammate Adam “Pacman” Jones were linked as the baddest of the NFL’s “Bad Boys”, which raised the ire of NFL Commission and chief disciplinarian Roger Goodell. But after Henry was given a second chance in 2008 by the Goodell and the Bengals, namely head coach Marvin Lewis, he came back to the team a changed man when Cincy re-signed him in August 2008. Henry made good on and off the field to become a key member of 2009 AFC North leaders until he was sidelined with a broken arm on Nov 8. “It’s a very difficult thing with his loss,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said, “and a young life that won’t ever get to reach his full potential.” Henry’s former teammate and friend, Chad Ochocinco, was very emotional when recalling his teammate of five years.Ochocinco choked back tears as he said to reporters in the Bengals locker room, “Chris was a very good, very good friend of mine, we were extremely close. Especially when you’re on the right path."Henry’s death is the second traumatic loss for the Bengals this season. Unfortunately earlier in the 2009 season, Vikki Zimmer, the wife of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, unexpectedly passed away just days before the Bengals won at Baltimore. The Bengals (9-4) are on the cusp of claiming the AFC North title and solidifying their playoff dream, but you have to wonder how they will deal with this tragic loss. No one has a crystal ball, but we do know is that the Bengals have suffered a horrible loss that will surely take time to heal, but unfortunately they also have to play the San Diego Chargers this Sunday sometimes the NFL machine can be pretty cruel the way it keeps rolling on. Here’s hoping that Bengals family can pull together for a second time this season.Henry’s career numbers will stand at 119 receptions for 1826 yards with 15.3 yards per catch average and 21 TDs. He is survived by his fiancand the three children that they were raising.R.I.P Chris Henry, you were taken away from us too soon. This article is also featured on Taking It to the House.
